Josefa Ferlita — visual and media artist of Italian-Venezuelan origin. Graduated from the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM, 2023). Based in Montreal.
“Sommet, matter must be polished to better reveal the spirit.”
I am passionate about forms of self-representation. I draw inspiration from artists like Michel Journiac, Suzy Lake, Cindy Sherman, and Sophie Calle.
My performative approach is influenced by the aesthetics of Japanese experimental cinema. It includes the works of Toshio Matsumoto and also integrates the visual tensions of Expressionism.
My work is also an inner quest. I explore the complexity of identity through psychoanalysis.
I study Jung’s archetypes, I analyze the forces of Freud’s unconscious.
I cross paths with Lacan’s language structures. I also incorporate anthropology, especially observation-based approaches dear to ethnologists.
The universe of Félix Vallotton, the foreign Nabis, inhabits me deeply.
His use of black and white, and his bitter-sweet critique of the bourgeoisie, resonate within my practice.
Like him, I seek to convey a thought that is poetic, critical and introspective, through each work.

« In each image, a fragment of the ego whispers its truth. »
« Explore art and psychoanalysis through unique visual works that question the ego and introspection. »
